Chicago's Sears Tower takes on name of British financial services company

By The Associated Press {CHICAGO - When Chicago residents go to bed Thursday night their beloved Sears Tower, one of the world's iconic skyscrapers and the tallest building in the U.S., will no longer be the Sears Tower. It will be Willis Tower. Or will it? "It's always going to be the Sears Tower. It's part of Chicago and I won't call it Willis Tower. In Chicago we hold fast," Chicago teacher Marianne Turk, 46, said as she stood in line to go up to the building's Skydeck on Monday. Mayor Richard M. Daley, the building's owners and others will be at a Thursday renaming ceremony hosted by Willis Group Holdings. The London-based insurance services company secured the naming rights as part an agreement to lease 140,000 square feet of space in the tower. The building has been known as Sears Tower since it opened in 1973. It's original tenant, Sears Roebuck and Co., moved out in 1992. A real estate investment group in 2004, American Landmark Properties of Skokie, now owns the 1,450-foot (440-meter), 110-story skyscraper. When the renaming was announced in March, a spokesman for Willis Group Holdings said the company understood the "sentimental attraction to the Sears Tower name," but noted the company was bringing hundreds of jobs to the city. The Sears Tower isn't the only well known building to undergo a name change - New York City's Pan Am Building became the MetLife Building and Chicago's Standard Oil Building is now the Aon Center, said Carol Willis, founder and director of The Skyscraper Museum in New York. Historically, skyscrapers have been ever-changing buildings and businesses within themselves, acting as a commodity to compete for high rents and tenants, Willis said. People are mistaken when they see tall buildings as symbols of a corporation, she said. "Skyscrapers are really buildings that are about money," Willis said. "Naming rights are an asset of the building. They can be turned into money and that's what the new owners are doing." It's become common for professional sports teams to sell the naming rights of their stadiums and arenas, as Chicago White Sox fans can attest, when their team's stadium, Comiskey Park, renamed U.S. Cellular Field in 2003. But the public hasn't always taken to renamed skyscrapers. Many New Yorkers still refer to the Sony Building as the AT&T Building, said William Lozito, head of Minneapolis-based brand naming company Strategic Name Development. Getting the public to accept the Willis Tower name will be all the more difficult because the company is British and not immediately recognized by most Americans, he said. "I don't think people are going to let go," Lozito said. "You don't mess with a landmark. It would be like trying to change the name of the Brooklyn Bridge. It's a reference point. I think it's disorienting to try to change the name." The tower's owners acknowledge it will take time for some people to accept the new name, but they're confident it will happen eventually. "It is controversial to a lot of people," said John Huston of American Landmark Properties, who represents the building ownership. "It is an icon, but I believe over time it will become known as Willis Tower and a name that we'll be proud of." Alex Lucas, 29, an Arlington Heights business systems analyst who works down the street from the skyscraper, was so displeased with the name change that he started a Web site, http://www.itsthesearstower.com/. "The people of Chicago do value history," he said. "Just because it's a commercial structure doesn't mean it isn't historical. Chicago is going to lose a big part of what is its identity and I don't know what's going to fill that space."}http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/090716/business/us_sears_tower

"New Jersey officials have been planning the next train tunnel under the Hudson River for so long that it is already on its third name. This month, work is scheduled to begin on the Mass Transit Tunnel — formerly known as the Trans-Hudson Express and, before that, Access to the Region’s Core — more than 15 years after it was conceived."

Two New Cloaking Devices Close In on True Invisibility

Richard A. Lovettfor National Geographic News
May 6, 2009
{Cloaking devices, like the Star Trek technology that can make whole Romulan warships disappear, came a step closer to reality last week.
Two independent teams have developed silicon-based materials that can hide microscopic objects. The materials are the first to work in near-infrared light, wavelengths very close to visible light.
On a flat surface, an object covered with a piece of cloth would normally be detectable based on its telltale bump. But with the new materials, even the bump seems to vanish.
A team led by Xiang Zhang at the University of California, Berkeley, achieved this effect by drilling scores of tiny nano-holes into the cloaking material.
(See pictures of materials that use nanotechnology.)
These holes change the material's optical properties, allowing light to bend around the hidden object, as described in the April 29 issue of Nature Materials.
The other team, led by Michal Lipson at Cornell University, achieved the same effect by covering their material's surface with tiny pillars also designed to bend light. The Cornell group's paper is currently under review by Nature Photonics.
Jason Valentine, one of the Berkeley researchers, calls his team's material a "carpet cloak." In both cases the process is like hiding something beneath a rug.
"The object is effectively hidden on the ground," Valentine said.
Small But Effective
Both materials still have a long way to go before they're ready for stealth military operations. To start with, both cloaks work only in infrared light for now. The next step is to try to develop a version that works in visible wavelengths.
The cloaks are also capable of hiding only microscopic objects.}
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/05/090506-cloaking-device-star-trek.html
{But even that has potential uses, Valentine said. In optical computing, for example, such cloaks could be used to allow light to move more efficiently, by hiding the parts of a computer chip that get in the way of the beams.
Also, expensive dielectric mirrors—special mirrors used to make printed circuits for electronics—can be ruined by tiny defects in their surfaces.
"You could cloak a defect and make it look like a perfect mirror again," Valentine said.
Scaling up to hide an object the size of a BB-gun pellet might be possible, but going larger will be difficult, he said.
In the Berkeley material, for instance, "the holes have to be smaller than the wavelength of light, and many are required."
From Theory to Practice
The development of these working invisibility cloaks is exciting, but it's not a huge theoretical breakthrough, Ulf Leonhardt, a theoretical physicist at Scotland's University of St. Andrews, said in an email.
"Such an idea already appeared in my very first paper on cloaking," published in the journal Science in 2006, he said.
(Read "Invisibility Cloaks Possible, Study Says.")
Carl Poitras, a researcher with the Cornell group, agrees.
"Like a lot of things we can do," he said, "the theory is predicted ahead of time, but the technology isn't there to show it."
Now, for cloaking devices at least, the theoretical models are starting to become real-life products.}

The PATH and BART

-
Although SF isn't an island like Manhattan is, the SF Bay needed an underwater BART tunnel as much as NY&NJ needed its PATH tunnels under the Hudson River.
While the forerunner of PATH was up & running by 1908, BART didn't start until 1974.

As BART opened on September 11, the M2 part of the Istanbul Metro commenced on that date.
{Construction of the Istanbul Metro, also known as the M2, began on September 11, 1992, but faced many challenges due to the numerous archaeological sites that were discovered during the drilling process, which slowed down or fully stopped the construction of many stations. Taking into account the seismic activity in Istanbul, the entire subway network was built with the cut-and-cover method to withstand an earthquake of up to 9.0 on the Richter magnitude scale.}

Conficker virus begins to attack PCs

Fri Apr 24, 5:32 PM

By Jim Finkle

{BOSTON (Reuters) - A malicious software program known as Conficker that many feared would wreak havoc on April 1 is slowly being activated, weeks after being dismissed as a false alarm, security experts said.
Conficker, also known as Downadup or Kido, is quietly turning thousands of personal computers into servers of e-mail spam and installing spyware, they said.
The worm started spreading late last year, infecting millions of computers and turning them into "slaves" that respond to commands sent from a remote server that effectively controls an army of computers known as a botnet.
Its unidentified creators started using those machines for criminal purposes in recent weeks by loading more malicious software onto a small percentage of computers under their control, said Vincent Weafer, a vice president with Symantec Security Response, the research arm of the world's largest security software maker, Symantec Corp.
"Expect this to be long-term, slowly changing," he said of the worm. "It's not going to be fast, aggressive."
Conficker installs a second virus, known as Waledac, that sends out e-mail spam without knowledge of the PC's owner, along with a fake anti-spyware program, Weafer said.
The Waledac virus recruits the PCs into a second botnet that has existed for several years and specializes in distributing e-mail spam.
"This is probably one of the most sophisticated botnets on the planet. The guys behind this are very professional. They absolutely know what they are doing," said Paul Ferguson, a senior researcher with Trend Micro Inc, the world's third-largest security software maker.
He said Conficker's authors likely installed a spam engine and another malicious software program on tens of thousands of computers since April 7.
He said the worm will stop distributing the software on infected PCs on May 3 but more attacks will likely follow.
"We expect to see a different component or a whole new twist to the way this botnet does business," said Ferguson, a member of The Conficker Working Group, an international alliance of companies fighting the worm.
Researchers had feared the network controlled by the Conficker worm might be deployed on April 1 since the worm surfaced last year because it was programed to increase communication attempts from that date.
The security industry formed the task force to fight the worm, bringing widespread attention that experts said probably scared off the criminals who command the slave computers.
The task force initially thwarted the worm using the Internet's traffic control system to block access to servers that control the slave computers.
Viruses that turn PCs into slaves exploit weaknesses in Microsoft's Windows operating system. The Conficker worm is especially tricky because it can evade corporate firewalls by passing from an infected machine onto a USB memory stick, then onto another PC.
The Conficker botnet is one of many such networks controlled by syndicates that authorities believe are based in eastern Europe, Southeast Asia, China and Latin America.}

Sunshine 60, Tokyo opened in April 1978

Sunshine_60
{Perhaps the only haunted skyscraper in the world, the Sunshine 60 building was built on the site of a former prison.
This prison had been the site of numerous executions, including those of seven top WWII war criminals, one of whom was Hideki Tojo, the prime minister of Japan during WWII.
Since its construction there have been reports of supernatural sightings in and around the building.
Tallest building in Tokyo and Japan from April 1978 to February 1991, beating out the Shinjuku Mitsui Building and eventually losing out to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building.
The 1992 manga "X" by CLAMP had this building play a prominent role, housing both a secret basement lab and also being a "kekkai" or sort of protective charm. This manga was made into an animated film in 1996.
In real life this building is still much less mundane than its no-nonsense appearance would suggest. Part of a multibuilding complex that includes a shopping mall and hotel, this building has an observatory on the top floors, and also a planetarium and an aquarium on the 10th floor.}

Officially, its still much better to think that life only has ever existed on one world. That way, there is no reason to ever search for evidence of ancient technology on other worlds. Of course, since the universe is several billions of years old, life might have had plenty of time to develop on many other worlds.

{One of the most prominent examples of Replicant-like robots in modern culture are the humanoid Cylons on the Sci-Fi Channel series Battlestar Galactica. Blade Runner was acknowledged as an influence on the series. Actor Edward James Olmos, who stars in the series, also co-starred in Blade_Runner. Tricia Helfer, who plays the main humanoid-Cylon character "Number Six" on the series, was having trouble determining how to play a humanoid robot when production began, so co-star Olmos advised her to watch Blade Runner. Helfer has stated that it greatly informed how she approached the role. The human resistance on Cylon-occupied Caprica even referred to the Cylons as "skin jobs," the slang term for Replicants from Blade Runner, in the late season 2 episode "Downloaded". Episode writer Bradley Thompson inserted the line hoping science fiction fans would notice and enjoy the reference: the term met with popular reception by fans, and subsequently many characters in the next two seasons of the series regularly refer to the humanoid Cylons as "skin jobs".}

Apple Computer Inc. (AC)

Apple Computer Inc., was established on April 1, 1976. AC started long before the public Internet & interconnected potable devices. Eventually the pocket telephone concept became the cellphone & when the technology became small enough, the portable computer was born.
AC was incorporated in January 1977 & it took AC some 3 decades to merge the pocket computer with the cell phone. For many the iPhone is the epitome of having a pocket computer.

Urban Tech Links is an exploration into the urban technology environment as well as some rural and mysterious places.

This is a semi-private general referencing blog that is not intended to be used for spam purposes.

Cities, people & things in general, all become part of a vast database.

The Greater_Tokyo_Area is the most populated urban region on the planet.
https://wikimedia.org/Sand_Island_and_Honolulu.jpg Honolulu hasn't permitted any buildings to be as tall as what is in Miami, LA or SF. Indeed, Honolulu, has avoided having a Singapore or especially HK size skyline.
https://wikimedia.org/Perth_airport.JPG
Honolulu and
Perth, WA are in such nice climate zones. They are a couple of the most isolated major cities on the planet.
In some ways, Australia has been able to surpass Canada, despite it having a smaller land area & less population than Canada. Unlike Montreal & especially Vancouver, Perth & especially Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane, have allowed several taller buildings than what is allowed in Montreal & Vancouver.
However, Honolulu's_tallest_buildings still haven't been permitted to even be as tall as the 2 tallest in the Giza_pyramid_complex in Cairo, Egypt

Urban Tech Links is a basic blog about referencing tall buildings & urban technology in various cities in general. Thus, it's mostly just a list of various urban and tech links. It's also about comparing various cities & infrastructure.
Some cities like to have narrow bridges, short trains & small buildings, like Vancouver, while many others cities reach for the sky
There is a point when a lot of major cities start to permit buildings to be taller than the 2 tallest pyramids in Egypt. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egyptian_pyramids
Paris & London, NYC & Chicago, Tokyo & Seoul...

The BC part of Canada has tried to keep its infrastructure as small as possible for as long as possible.
It wasn't until the 1970s when strict & stubborn Vancouver started to allow for some buildings to be almost as tall as the 2 tallest Egyptian pyramids. https://skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?searchID=105524651&offset=50

1973 Royal_Centre_(Vancouver) not quite as tall as .:.
1977 Harbour_Centre not counting the flagpole, its still shorter than the original height of the tallest Egyptian pyramid.
2001 One_Wall_Centre, not including its spire, was the first building in Vancouver & BC to be taller than the tallest pyramid in Egypt

For most of Vancouver's history, the city refused to permit any building to be taller than the pyramid on top of the 496' Custom_House_Tower in Boston, the 462' Smith_Tower in Seattle, the 453' Los_Angeles_City_Hall. Of course today they are all just like stumps. 481' and 471' are the original heights of the 2 tallest in the Giza_pyramid_complex.
https://wikimedia.org/Pyramids_of_the_Giza_Necropolis.jpg
https://wikimedia.org/Kheops-Pyramid.jpg
"Initially standing at 146.6 metres (481 feet), the Great Pyramid was the world's tallest human-made structure for more than 3,800 years. Over time, most of the smooth white limestone casing was removed, which lowered the pyramid's height to the current 138.5 metres (454.4 ft)"
HeightOriginal: 146.6 m (481 ft) or 280 cubits
Current: 138.5 m (454 ft)
HeightCurrently: 136.4 metres (448 ft)
Original: 143.5 m (471 ft; 274 cu)

"The 1997 study noted that the opportunities for buildings significantly exceeding existing permitted heights were limited. There were a total of five sites where buildings exceeding the 450 foot height limit are possible and two sites in the northwest corner of the Central Business District where heights up to 400 feet (exceeding the 300 foot limit) could be considered." https://council.vancouver.ca/20030515/pe2.htm

Indeed, it's tough to believe that for the longest time, any building in the BC part of Canada had to be considerably shorter than the Washington_Monument in DC or the Philadelphia_City_Hall.

Then Vancouver wouldn't permit any building to be as tall as the Cairo_Tower
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cairo_Tower "At 187 m (614 ft), it was the tallest structure in Egypt for 37 years until 1998..."
2016 was when a Hotel-Condo was allowed to be slightly taller than the Cairo-Tower

The Cairo_Flagpole is the world's tallest flagpole, at 201.952 m (662 ft 7 in) tall. No building in Vancouver is allowed to be as tall.
The Living_Shangri-La tower is close, but not quite.
Of course Vancouver, BC & even Canada can't stop Egypt from building big & tall.
{The origin of Al-Qahirah is said to come from the appearance of the planet Mars during the foundation of the City of Cairo. The planet Mars, which in Greek was called Ares, was associated with ruin or destruction and was called Al Najm Al Qahir in Arabic. Al Najm Al Qahir is transliterated as "the destroyer star [planet]".} http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cairo#Etymology

https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/the-cairo-washington-dc Washinton, DC made sure that going into the 20th century, it was going to have mostly low rise buildings like Paris & London or Berlin. However, the Greater Paris Region would eventually allow some tall buildings in certain areas. London even moreso. Yet, Greater London & Metropolitan Paris, certainly have allowed some tall buildings.

Vancouver has been under a multigenerational set of restrictions as well as a small thinking & planning agenda. Part of this might be attributed to a backwater BC mentality. However, some parts of Greater Vancouver are allowed to build on a grander scale.

Edmonton, Seattle, Portland & eventually Calgary will all have underground train stations longer than what's in Vancouver. Yet, Vancouver could have really benefited from having proper big city long stations. Most of the regions bridges are so narrow that its difficult to have a proper bus lane & HOV lane system. But Vancouver & BC are all about inefficiency. Things might eventually improve if enough people someday start to see the growing gap between what most cities allow vs. stubborn Vancouver.

Civilization_(computer_game)

The Universe seems to be a vast Multi-channel of space & time that originated from a central point of energy. But what or who started this Big_Bang of cosmic information? Its like a cosmic projection program running inside an immense planetarium. The energy of nature or part of a creators plan. Thus either nature or a conscious creator has set up a cosmic matrix of space & time. Humans are just beginning to try to understand how an intelligent force of creation set this all up. Computer models factor into the study of reality & VR helps to illustrate different phases & parts of the universe.
