Historic photos show Stanley Park more than 100 years ago

https://stanleyparkvan.com/stanley-park-van-road-stanley-park-causeway.html

The 3 lane wide option was never followed-up with a lower 3 lane tunnel. So, instead of 3 lanes each way, everything is funneled into just 3 lanes.

https://council.vancouver.ca/000203/pe3.htm Thus, no need to have a bridge designed to be strong enough to have at least two 3 lane decks.

In Vancouver and backwards BC in general, its very difficult to build infrastructure for long-range future capacity.

After several generations, Stanley_Park has remained as a provincial gateway to backwater Vancouver.

While no one was able to stop the Horseshoe_Bay_ferry_terminal from being built, too many people still don't want Greater_Vancouver to have a proper big city train and highway link between West_Vancouver and Downtown_Vancouver

Fortunately, the BCMV never made it to Sydney, NSW and SF, CA. Thus, their CBD or downtown has good rail and highway links.

However, it was almost like part of the Vancouver MV made it to Auckland, NZ.

Another deadly crash on Pattullo Bridge

 https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/pattullo-bridge-fatal-crash-february-2025

When the narrow Pattullo+Bridge was built, NW was a provincial backwater & it was amazing to have plumbing & electricity in Surrey. Being in the BC part of Canada there was such a lack of vision that someday NW & Surrey might become mighty river cities. Such as Montreal, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary & Portland, Oregon.

Despite being close to the Pacific Ocean, NW & BC weren't just half a world away from Sydney, NSW, they might as well have been on a different world, altogether. Thus, there was no need or vision to build a structure on the scale of the Sydney+Harbour+Bridge (SHB).

https://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/pattullo-bridge-history-built-in-1937-the-span-was-expected-to-last-50-years Only one narrow sidewalk on a very narrow bridge. Of course the SHB had the budget & the foresight to have a sidewalk on both sides.

Best mate of man killed in Harbour Bridge crash calls for safety improvements

 https://www.9news.com.au/national/sydney-harbour-bridge-crash-friends-of-jamal-choukri-call-for-better-safety-measures-on-bridge-after-truck-driver-killed/80225522-a55a-4edd-8843-e689a2990dcd

The Sydney+Harbour+Bridge (SHB) is a nice wide structurer with high traffic volume, but there are some safety issues.

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2024/oct/17/sydney-harbour-bridge-closed-after-multi-car-crash-leaves-one-dead

All & all, the SHB is a much larger & better structure than the very narrow, dangerous & inept Pattullo+Bridge in BC.

Ash-scattering pier near fishing bar gets Surrey council nod

 https://www.surreynowleader.com/local-news/ash-scattering-pier-on-fraser-river-gets-surrey-council-nod-7602905

Perhaps it's only fitting that its in clear view of the dangerous, decerped & inept Pattullo_Bridge. The very narrow PB never had enough room for a steel or proper concrete central barrier, no emergency lanes & only 1 narrow sidewalk. Of course there was no provision for a lower train & truck deck, as will also be the case with the new bridge.

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/pattullo-bridge-a-loaded-gun/article700812

The old PB might not quite be the worst bridge in BC, but it sure became a fine example of inept backwater BC planning.

"Approximately 15 people have died in traffic accidents mainly due to head-on crashes on Pattullo since 1990." https://www.canadianunderwriter.ca/insurance/bc-bridge-scene-for-another-fatal-crash-1000047689/

https://projects.eao.gov.bc.ca/api/document/5b73439a5bc7e60024dc108b/fetch/Appendix__18.13_Historical_Heritage_Study.pdf

The Pattullo_Bridge opened on November 15, 1937 and was designed without any future capacity considerations. Instead of 2 wide sidewalks, there was only 1 narrow sidepath. The bridge should have been designed to be widened in a few decades. Plus, a provision for a lower truck & LRT deck as transportation needs increased.

The incredible Sydney_Harbour_Bridge opened on 19_March_1932. Unfortunatly, the old & the new PB are classic BC bottlenecks, by design.

Sydney Harbour Bridge (SHB)

The Sydney_Harbour_Bridge is such a fantastic structure.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/93/Harbour_Bridge_looking_South_%2814039660121%29.jpg Wow, originally with 6 lanes & 4 sets of tracks. The Burrard_Bridge in Vancouver, BC was designed to have 6 lanes & a lower level for streetcars or tram-trains. No trams on the non-existent lower level, as Vancouver wants to be one of the last cities to bring back its trams. Unlike NSW, BC seems to have a problem with allowing trains on road bridges in the 21st century.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3051587/A-waterfall-gushing-Harbour-Bridge-crocodiles-stalking-train-station-flood-water-surfing-Opera-House-jaw-dropping-fake-photos-brightened-Sydneystorm.html

It's no wonder that such a wide & magnificent bridge from the 1930s would instantly become a fantastic NSW landmark & an Australian icon. Unfortunatly, it looks like Canada won't have a bridge of a similar magnitude by the 2030s. The 4 lane Pattullo+Bridge in BC is less than half its width & only has 1 sidewalk & never had any provision for trains. Its replacement will only open with 4 lanes & no HOV or bus lanes. Thus, its a pale imitation to the 8 lane Anzac_Bridge
