Brisbane-Sydney-Melbourne-Toronto

The Greater Toronto Area has been the only place in Canada where some Australian size residential towers have been permitted. So far, Montreal & Vancouver won't allow any residential towers to even reach 65 stories.

If Montreal were to ever allow something like a La_DefenseParramatta or a Canary_Wharf on the London_Docklands, then some Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Toronto size towers would potentially be allowed.

Extremely restrictive Vancouver can't stop Burnaby, Coquitlam & especially Surrey from eventually having some Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Toronto size towers.

https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/3200-east-broadway-vancouver-rupert-station-mst-aquilini Since these buildings would be within the small city linmits of Vancover, they won't be allowed to be on the scale of what Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Toronto permit.

No residential or office tower within the city limits of little Vancouver is allowed to be as tall as the Telus_Sky tower at 222.3 m (729 ft) in Calgary and Seattle's Rainier_Square_Tower at 850-foot (260 m).

The Living_Shangri-La tower, at 200.86 metres (659 ft) and the Paradox_Hotel_Vancouver at 188-metre (617 ft) are the tallest within Vancouver.

Unfortunatly, Montreal can't quite be included into the category with, Brisbane-Sydney-Melbourne-Toronto (BSMT). That's because their tallest buildings still have to be shorter that what Paris & Melbourne allow. However, the Greater Montreal transportation infrastructure is at a level of what you would expect for a big city to have. Fortunately, Québec has never been thwarted by anything like a BC Mind Virus (BCMV).

Brisbane-Sydney-Melbourne-SF-Boston-Toronto (B-S-M-SF-B-T)

Auckland, NZ, along with Perth, WA and Seattle, WA have no problems with taller buildings and wider bridges than what Vancouver allows. Established cities like London & Paris, NYC & Chicago, big L.A. and even smaller Singapore, all seem to plan, spend & build more infrastructure than backwards Vancouver does.

Cities like Brisbane-Sydney-Melbourne-SF-Boston-and-Toronto are all on a much larger scale, simply because they don't have anything like the overlapping restrictions that backwards Vancouver & BC has imposed for itself.

People have gotten so used to Vancouver being a backwater in a vast country which doesn't even have 1% of the world's population.

https://cityhallwatch.wordpress.com/2025/02/10/jericho-coalition-demands-halt-draft-odp-jericho-lands

There is quite a reluctance for small-minded Vancouver to not allow what's big by Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Toronto & SF standards.

https://x.com/CityHallWchVAN/status/1517347123225718785?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Eembeddedtimeline%7Ctwterm%5Escreen-name%3Acityhallwchvan%7Ctwcon%5Es1 There are only a handful of cities in BC where an attempt of tall buildings can happen. That's because most of BC is a mountainous wilderness, or simply just wilderness.

https://cityhallwatch.wordpress.com/2020/03/06/lights-out-at-vancouver-house Some people might be jelouse that others might have 2 or 3 homes, just like having 2 or 3 motorized vehicles. Should people in BC be limited to only have 1 home & 1 moto-vehicle? The next step would be to impose an AI run point system to discourage people from having no more than 1 or 2 kids.

Is the Stack, a tower or a stump?

 https://storeys.com/james-cheng-the-stack-vancouver

In Seattle, Toronto, Calgary & even Montreal, this would almost be just another average stump building. Those cities & so many more around the planet, have long since allowed office towers to have more than 40 floors. However, in the BC part of Canada, there is no office tower that has reached 40 stories, just a few residential towers are taller. Yet, sometimes the land value in Vancouver is more than in Toronto.

https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/vancouver-view-cone-restrictions-policies

Of course Seattle, Toronto, Calgary & Montreal have been allowed to be proper big cities, simple because they aren't under any Vancouver type restrictions or limitations.

https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/larwill-park-office-towers-vancouver-concept

Nevermind Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, LA, SF, Seattle, Toronto, Calgary & Montreal, Vancouver isn't even allowed to build as tall as the tallest buildings in Vaughan, Mississauga, Edmonton & Belleview, WA.

320 Granville Street, Vancouver

 https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/320-granville-bosa-faria-flooding-dispute

It's a nice looking building, but once again, it's only a half-size figurine, or a stump.

https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/bosa-waterfront-centre-320-granville-street-vancouver-office-tower

Unlike scenic Auckland, NZ & especially Sydney, Australia or SF, California, Vancouver continues to cut off the top 15-30 floors of any office tower development.

Even no residential tower within little Vancouver has been allowed to be as high as the tallest condo tower in Seattle, Calgary, Edmonton & Toronto. Especially, Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane.

6 towers with 2,500 homes proposed for strip mall near Lougheed Town Centre SkyTrain station

 https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/439-465-north-road-coquitlam-lougheed-skytrain-wesgroup-choice-properties?

Nothing in the 70s or 80s like in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane or Toronto. So many of these buildings should be designed in which an extra 20-30 floors can eventually be added.

The Lougheed Town Centre is one of the few areas in BC where some Australian & Southern Ontario size buildings could be constructed.

https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/pinnacle-lougheed-burnaby-western-canada-tallest-building While this might seem like a very tall buildig complex by backwater BC standards, it would only be of an average tall size in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Toronto.

First residents could move into Senakw's first rental housing tower by the end of 2025

 https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/senakw-vancouver-squamish-nation-construction-march-2025

This area should have had the tallest buildings in Vancouver. However, litle Vancouver isn't allowed to have buildings as tall as some in Brisbane-Sydney-Melbourne-SF-Boston-and-Toronto. While Vancouver remains so strict and restrictive, some the areas outside of, and around Vancouver, are allowing taller buildings. Thus, not only Burnaby, but eventually Surrey will have taller buildings than what Vancouver permits.

Big payment approved to remove social housing in a future Vancouver tower

 https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/1059-1075-nelson-street-vancouver-the-curv-social-housing-removed-cacs

The city & region has to work out a way so that there can be more affordable housing built. Unfortunately, little provincial Vancouver with all its extreme height restrictions make things more difficult. If a developer can actually build a Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne or Toronto size tower, if they also build an affordable housing structure, that can make a big difference in motivation. However, Vancouver has been a multigenerational trap which prevents it from becoming a proper city.

City of Vancouver proposes huge residential project near Science World

 https://www.vancouverisawesome.com/local-news/images-city-of-vancouver-proposes-huge-residential-project-near-science-world-10428874

https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/1405-main-street-1510-quebec-street-vancouver-rental-housing-towers

Despite being right next to a train station, these buildings will be 30-40 floors shorter than what they should be. Real dynamic cities such as, Brisbane-Sydney-Melbourne-SF-Boston-and-Toronto can build on a grand scale, because they aren't thwarted by anything like the overlapping restrictions that backwards Vancouver has imposed for generations.

Toughest time ever to afford a house in Vancouver, Canada

 https://vancouversun.com/news/toughest-time-ever-to-afford-a-house-vancouver-in-full-blown-crisis-rbc-report

If developers were allowed to build, Toronto, Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane size towers, as long as they also built some commonly affordable rental buildings, that would be an incentive. Sure, developers can build sky-high in Dubai, NYC & Chicago, but that's usually just for luxurious condo suites.

If developers in Vancouver & BC in general want to build much taller towers, they should also build a lot of low to mid-rise commonly affordable condominiums & rental units. Thus, by doing that in tandem, would allow them to build, Toronto, Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane size towers.

Unfortunately, unless the very strict Vancouver height limitations are updated to proper big city standards, semi-tall luxurious condo towers will be built, but with no incentive for developers to build a lot of affordable housing for a much larger market.

At least 35 towers with about 7,000 rental homes now proposed in the Broadway Plan area of Vancouver

 https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/broadway-plan-vancouver-rental-housing-tower-proposals

Montreal & Seattle have both grown into 4 million + metropolitan regions. They have longer trains for more capacity, wider bridges & taller buildings than what is allowed in Vancouver. Over the past several decades, Vancouver kept putting in more restrictions & red tape as a sort of, HOLD BACK THE CITY agenda. Thus, keeping things as small and backward as possible in Vancouver helps to maintain the small city symbolism & mentality. This symbolism is meant to be a constant reminder of the reluctance to build up a proper level of infrastructure.

On a larger scale, Canada is still nowhere of close to containing 1% of the world's population. It's a simple formula, allow a small amount of refugees or migrants in every year, but have a main focus of bringing in a wealthier & highly skilled demographic. Most of the world's human population consists of non-white people. Thus, if ever a KEEP CANADA SMALL, IT'S GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT mentality is firmly established, it's just another variation of the KEEP THEM OUT AGENDA.

Such an agenda should be challenged. Especially, when several other countries are able to contain more people on less land area. The old colonial mentality was partially about reducing the influx of non-white people & limiting their rights.

Luxury housing isn't the problem, it's the lack of building more affordable housing that is the problem. If developers are willing to have some mixed income housing projects on some sights, then they should be granted permission to build the more profitable taller Toronto, Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane size towers.

However, the KEEP VANCOUVER SMALL & BACKWARDS agenda has been so firmly entrenched for several decades. It's part of the larger, KEEP THEM OUT agenda. There has been such a slow growth agenda in BC throughout its history. This BC agenda never seemed to catch on with Alberta & Washington State.

Metro Vancouver Housing Deficit Grows To Over 45,000 Homes

 https://storeys.com/metro-vancouver-housing-deficit-fall-2024/

For several decades, multi-unit 4-5 story houses just weren't permitted to be built in Vancouver. Even the shoebox like, Vancouver special should have been allowed to have at least 3-4 levels. Plus, there should have been several 6-10 story block size apartment buildings or flats like in Paris & London. There was quite an emphasis on Vancouver stumps, especially, no 65 to 85 floor buildings like in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane & Toronto.

Very narrow bridges, which make it almost impossible to have a proper & efficient express bus & HOV network for the region. Fortunately, the backward BC mentality was never able to make it over to Australia to prevent bridge expansion or duplication.

Then even by late 2024, the first 2 SkyTrain lines only have 4 car trains of the newer coaches. The joke that is the Canada Line, still only runs 2 car trains. All 3 lines should have been designed to eventually have stations that could accommodate 8-10 car trains, but that would actually enable more people to efficiently travel around the region.

Fortunately again, this inept & horrible BC planning mentality was never able to infest & stop the Toronto Subway from having 6 car trains. However, by now, the TTC should have been running 8-10 car trains. It would have been chaos if the Montreal Metro was only running 3 car trains for the past several decades. Such an absurdity would be indicative of a, WHY EVEN BOTHER TO BUILD IT, mentality? Thats been the ongoing problem in BC since plumbing & electricity was first implemented.

Just to allow backwater BC to catch up to Alberta & Washington State would be challenging enough. Then to gradually think & plan on a scale of a Quebec & even an Ontario, might as well be just another Sci-Fi pipedream.

Over half of all Metro Vancouver homes projected to be condos by 2051

 https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/metro-vancouver-housing-growth-forecast-condos

For several decades, trains, bridges and buildings had to be half the size of what real cities allow. Vancouver and especially the Greater Vancouver Region couldn't build a huge wall, so the next best thing was to heavily impose a symbolic resistance to build big. Thus, by watering the scale of almost everything down by imposing a series of overlapping restrictions, Vancouver & BC remained stunted.

Then, things started to slowly change going into the 21st century.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Wall_Centre Opened in 2001.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogers_Tower 2004

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotel_Georgia_(Vancouver) 2012

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_buildings_in_Vancouver

While restrictive Vancouver started to allow some taller buildings, its still behind what many other cities permit. Especially that of what's in Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinnacle_One_Yonge Toronto

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainier_Square_Tower Seattle

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stantec_Tower Edmonton

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telus_Sky Calgary

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victoria_sur_le_Parc Montreal

Since Burnaby, Coquitlam & Surrey aren't under Vancouvers imposed restrictions, they can build taller. Eventually, Vancouver will have to allow taller residential buildings, but its as if there is a strong mind virus determined to hold the scale of everything back.

Lions+Gate+Bridge Still, a 3 lane crossing with no plans for a bus, train & truck tunnel. Australia has no problem building tunnels near bridges.

YVR-Canada-Line Still, a 2 car train of a joke, when several cities will have 6, 8 or 10 car trains.

A 72-storey tower proposed in Metrotown could be one of Metro Vancouver's tallest

 https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/burnaby-metrotown-72-storey-tower

Buildings over 70 floors in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Seattle & Toronto aren't earth-shattering like it is in backwater BC.

Such short platforms and trains for the SkyTrain-Canada Line

http://dailyhive.com/vancouver/short-platforms-and-trains-is-the-skytrain-canada-line-under-built-and-nearing-capacity

Unfortunately the multibillion dollar Canada+Line was designed to have very short stations. Much shorter than any underground stations in Edmonton & Seattle, especially Montreal & Toronto. Planning & building proper big city size infrastructure in BC has mostly been difficult through the decades. There has been a multi-generational mindset & agenda to hold BC back.

http://dailyhive.com/vancouver/canada-line-skytrain-richmond-tsawwassen

How could such a backwater BC agenda be so powerful since the 1800s? Well, if you can't build a wall around BC or generate a Star Trek like force field around Greater Vancouver, you can at least continually demonstrate a reluctance to build proper size infrastructure. Originally, BC was supposed to be a Whiteman's paradise. Thus, there was a strong resentment to build anything for nonwhites. Somehow, since BC was starting to be more multicultural since the 1960s & 70s, then even morso by the 1990s, one would think that there would be proper big city infrastructure built-up.

Instead, it was like the White British Colonial mentality continued right into modern times. Hospitals & schools weren't being properly expanded. Most bridges or crossing were kept narrow. Unfortunatly, such narrow-mindedness also went towards the planning & building of short trains. It was as if there was such a resentment to plan & build big for nonwhites, so almost everything has been kept small or backwards in BC.

http://dailyhive.com/vancouver/surrey-light-rail-skytrain-mistakes-underbuilt

BC has had such a slow growth agenda for several decades. Thus, by symbolically building inadequate infrastructure, it is hope that frustrated people will go elsewhere, or don't even show up. WTH? Fortunately, this agenda hasn't taken over Edmonton & Calgary or Seattle WA & Perth WA.

Most of the world is nonwhite & in most of the world the major cities are allowed to think & build big. Despite the size of Canada, it has less than 1% of the world's population. During the colonial times there was a strong KEEP THEM OUT mentality. However, while Canada has embrace multiculturalism for several decades, Canada has yet to contain 1% of the worlds population, let alone 2%. So much infrastructure, especially in backwards BC has been heled back or thwarted. Yet, the Pacific Rim has a big portion of the worlds population.

Pacific cities like Auckland, Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane, Seattle, Portland, SF, LA & SD, just don't have the same impose restrictions & inept planning like Vancouver & Victoria have.

Hobart, Tasmania

The University+of+Tasmania seems to have been Vancoverized, in terms of its 1 lane each way streets.

Hobart is much smaller than Vancouver, BC. Yet, it has more lanes on a total of 3 crossing over the River_Derwent_(Tasmania). Burrard Inlet in Greater Vancouver only has 2 bridges.

Fortunately, Hobart has the 5 lane Tasman+Bridge, the 4 lane Bowen+Bridge and the 2 lane Midland+Hwy+Bridge. That's a total of 11 lanes.

In contrast, Burrard_Inlet-Port_of_Vancouver only has the 6 lane Iron+Workers+Memorial+Bridge and the inadequate 3 lane Lions+Gate+Bridge. Only 9 lanes for the old port area of the region. While a multigenerational moratorium on any new harbor bridges made sense from an anti-freeway perspective, something essential was neglected. As of the end of 2024, no bus-bridge or bus-tunnel was ever built across the harbor. There is only a single freight train track, so of course there was never a truck-bridge or a truck-tunnel built. Even at the dawn of 2025, a SkyTrain or LRT crossing still only seems like a pipedream.

Greater Hobart isn't just the state capital, its the main city on the island of Tasmania, which has less than 65% of a million people. Greater_Vancouver is getting close to 3 million people, yet the infrastructure is so inadequate.

Anyone visiting Vancouver from the big 4 cities of Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane & Perth might be surprised to see shorter trains & smaller buildings & narrower bridges & highways. Those 4 cities, just like Toronto, Montreal, Calgary & Edmonton, are allowed to exist on a larger scale than extremely restrictive Vancouver. Indeed, its as if rainy Vancouver must continually water things down.
