The Iron Bridge and the old Champlain Bridge

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ironworkers_Memorial_Second_Narrows_Crossing

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Champlain_Bridge_(Montreal,_1962-2019) Both became classic 6 lane bottlenecks or chokepoints. That's because more than 6 lanes of traffic connected to such bridges.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel-De_Champlain_Bridge An 8 lane bridge with 2 REM tracks. While I would like it to have been 10 or 12 lanes with 4 tracks, its still so much better than what backwards Vancouver would allow. 8 lanes plus 2 HOV lanes & 2 bus lanes, because the REM train isn't running 24 hours.

The+Lion+Bridge+and+The+Iron+Bridge are just too inadequate to be modern transportation crossings.

The inept Lion_Bridge should have had bus & train tunnels built next to it decades ago.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lions_Gate_Bridge An 8 lane road tunnel could allow the Lions-Gate-Bridge to become a foot & bike crossing, but that's what a proper big city would do.

Urban Data Links, etc...

Some UDL posts might occasionally just have a few links that will eventually become part of a more complete post.

The BC infrastructure is quite lacking when compared to what's in Calgary & Seattle.

The building only has 39 levels above the ground & the windows only go up to the 36 floor. In contrast, the B of A Tower in Seattle has windows up to the 76th floor.

SDO for short stations vs. long trains and stations

Although the station platform only allows room for a three-car trainset, when the station was first opened a six-car trainset was used on the line. In this case, only the first three train cars' doors opened at this station (selective door operation). It was not until 22 July 2006 that a dedicated three-car trainset began service on the line. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xiaobitan_metro_station

SDO is such a great way to add a couple of cars without having to extend the platform until its absolutely necessary.

However, no office tower has ever been permitted to have a 40th floor. That's not the case in Calgary & Seattle, because they aren't under any Vancouver height restrictions. Yet, Vancouver has the highest land costs in Canada.

vancouvers-population-declined-for-the-first-time-in-40-years-according-to-stats-can-data

After decades of steady growth, Vancouver’s population took its first downturn since the 1970s.

Data from Statistics Canada shows the city’s population in 2020 at 700,015 but the next year dipping down to 693,235, a difference of 6,780.

The BC Quagmire

BC has so many imposed restrictions which continually stunt & thwart the place. Switzerland can approximately fit into BC 23 times. Yet, BC doesn't even have the population of one Switzerland. Canada is the world's 2nd largest country in overall area. Yet, it hasn't been allowed to have 1% of the world's population.

Environmental restrictions while intentionally good, can also really slow down the growth & energy of a region.

There should be a focus on various reliable power sources, not just from electric power.

There should also be a reasonable amount of time to transition away from oil & gas, instead of such a madrush push.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_fuel#Nuclear_reactors Such power systems might be great for bases on the moon & Mars, etc. However, for the systemically active earth, there is always a risk. But nothing could ever go wrong, except for...

Hopefully, and some actually believe, that there will never be a mega-earthquake in California.

Of course if there ever is a major earthquake in that part of California, the result might be a Chernobyl & Fukushima, all at once. That would be a hell of a way to reduce the population of California.
