Selective door operation (SDO) is used at some stations where the platform is shorter than the train, such as at Baker Street https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Underground_S7_and_S8_Stock#Features

The first 2 SkyTrain lines only have 80m stations, which can accomodate 5 of the newest cars. However, with SDO a 5 car train can become 7.

The Canada embasement Line was only designed to have 50m stations, not 152m stations like the Montreal Metro. Unfortunatly, the underbuilt Canada Line stations weren't designed to accommodate 5 car trains, only a 2.5 car joke of a train. Getting past the half-car B$, three 20m cars would form a 60m train. SDO can not only make a 3 car train possible, but a 5 car train length of 100m, despite its absurd 50m platform. It just would have been better to have built proper big city stations in the first place.

Of course Vancouver would opt to have shorter underground train stations than Montréal, Toronto, Edmonton, Seattle, SF & LA, because shorter trains help to increase urban transportation congestion. Unfortunately, increasing congestion is a key component of the Vancouver city planning mentality & BC in general.

Yaletown–Roundhouse station's fare gate capacity increased by 66%

 https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/skytrain-yaletown-roundhouse-station-additional-fare-gates-completed

The Canada line is such a watered down version of what should have been a proper big city airport and ferry rapid transit link. Just because this infrastructure project had to be scaled down during its first phase, the stations still could have been designed to eventually accommodate 5-6 car trains. Unfortunately, the stations were only designed to accommodate a 2.5 car train. While this perfectly fits in with the inept urban transportation mentality and especially fits in with the BC congestive transportation agenda, this is another sad result.

https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/skytrain-yaletown-roundhouse-station-fare-gate-expansion

Despite being downtown with several condominiums around, the Yaletown-Roundhouse_station is too small for an inner-city station.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yaletown-Roundhouse_station#Station_information

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f4/Yaletown_Roundhouse_Stn.jpg/1280px-Yaletown_Roundhouse_Stn.jpg

There is barely enough level clarence beyond the short platform for another car. To remedy this inadequate situation, this line needs to have three full-size cars, not just some eventual 2.5 car joke of a train.

https://www.eke-electronics.com/automatic-selective-door-operation-asdo

Then eventually, once people got used to a 3 car train, an extra car could be added at each end, resulting in a 5 car train. Its a workaround that can eventually enable the 3rd line or the C Line to run 3-5 cars trains to meet demand.

Then the Exp. Line and Mil. Line, or what could become A & B lines with standard 5 car trains. However, during the busy times, a 7 car train could be possible with selective-door-operation technology.

It would have been better to have just built all of the Skytrain stations long enough for 5 car trains in the first place, with enough level track clearance for 10 car trains eventually.

Selective Door Operation (SDO)

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selective_door_operation#UK_variations

SDO is a great way to add an extra car at both ends of a train. Thus, a 3 car train can become 5 & a 6 car train could become 8.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Underground_S7_and_S8_Stock#Features

The Chicago L can run up to an 8 car train, because that's the maximum station platform length. If the L can ever have walkthrough trains, then an 8 car train could become a 10 car train with SDO.

Stubborn Vancouver & BC just can't seem to allow for proper comprehensive transportation planning.

Unfortunately, the multibillion dollar Canada+Line wasn't designed for significant future capacity. No five car trains, just a 2.5 car joke. There was a lack of vision to connect the Horseshoe+Bay ferry+terminal with downtown Vancouver and the airport.

SDO for short stations to make for longer trains

Although the station platform only allows room for a three-car trainset, when the station was first opened a six-car trainset was used on the line. In this case, only the first three train cars' doors opened at this station (selective door operation). It was not until 22 July 2006 that a dedicated three-car trainset began service on the line. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xiaobitan_metro_station

SDO is such a great way to add a couple of cars without having to extend the platform until its absolutely necessary.

Evolution of the Vancouver SkyTrain 1985-2035

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3kzHlQQSeg

The first 2 lines only have stations that can accommodate the new 5 car trains, not 8-10 cars.

Unfortunately, the Canada Line wasn't designed to accommodate 5 car trains, only a 2.5 car joke of a train.

https://sellacontrols.com/automatic-selective-door-opening-asdo-correct-side-door-enabling-csde/

Eventually, a 5 car train could have an extra car at each end to become 7.

Despite initial cost cutting measures, the Canada_Line still could have been designed to eventually have 160 m long stations, not 160 foot joke stations.

West Broadway at Cambie Street

Under current station platform limitations, the 2nd line can only accommodate 5 car trains, not 10. The 3rd line can only accommodate a 2.5 car train, not 5 and especially not 10 cars. That despite it being an airport line and potential link to a BC Ferry Terminal train station.

Skyline (Honolulu) Rapid Transit

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skyline_(Honolulu) Only 4 car trains? At least it's not a 2 - 2.5 car joke of a train that is the Canada embarrassment Line in backwards Vancouver.

Fortunately, it's a walkthrough train and with SDO, it could eventually become a 6 car train, if there is ever a need to increase capacity by 50%.

The new Capstan Station recorded SkyTrain's fourth-lowest ridership after one year

 https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/skytrain-capstan-station-ridership-canada-line

Wow, this picture almost makes it look like its a big-city train station and not just a 2 car train joke. The CLine should have opened with 5-6 car trains, or at least 3 car trains. Any station can have the potential of becoming more popular, especially when there are more residential and business structures close to it.

The Can-Line could really benefit from Selective+Door+Operation, which would allow for longer trains.

How Copenhagen built a metro for free https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzamwVH3CXU&t=8s At least this could run 3 car trains right from when it started.

Vancouver’s NEW Mark V SkyTrain

Vancouver's Mark 1 SkyTrain History

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHzj0vDg13U

Unfortunately, the stations were only designed to accommodate 6 short cars on an 80 m platform. Eventually, even with the longer cars, Selective+Door+Operation will be necessary to allow for longer trains.

Seoul's Subway System Is Decades Ahead of many others

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPlGQDpx4xg

While there could be a reasonable argument that if a subway or elevated line isn't expected to be that busy in its first few years, then just build half-size stations and run half-length trains. However, in the case of backwards Vancouver, what should have been stations that were designed to accommodate at least 5 car trains, were only designed for an eventual 2.5 car train. Thus, it will be challenging enough just to modify the incredibly short Canada Line stations to gradually accommodate 3 full-size 20 m cars, not just some 2.5 car joke of a train for a 50 m station.

Fortunately the Skyline_(Honolulu) stations can accommodate a 4 car train right from the start. Someday, with SDO a 4 car train could become a 6 car train.

If Selective+Door+Operation (SDO) can ever be implemented on the YVR-Canada Line then it can go from being a 2 car joke of a train to a 3 car attempt of a train. Then, once people got used to 3 car trains, an extra car could be added at both ends, thus allowing for a 5 car train.

Ultimately, the YVR-Canada+Line should have been designed as a proper big-city size train with 8-10 cars. There seems to be such a lack of proper long-term transportation infrastructure planning in BC. To just build a small-scale line as a symbolic demonstration of reluctance towards the Pacific Rim is so absurd.

Fortunately, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane never opted for such a short train.

SkyTrain (Greater Vancouver) Network

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SkyTrain_(Vancouver)#Network

The SkyTrain+bridges could have been designed to be proper multimodal crossings. Unfortunately, the BC way is to provide a half-assed attempt.

The Skybridge between NW & Surrey is one of the worlds best examples of inept urban planning. No foot & bike paths & especially, no bus lanes. Fortunately, the backward BC mentality wasn't able to reach & prevent Oregon from building the fantastic Tilikum_Crossing.

The first 2 SkyTrain bridges should have been designed to accommodate at least 3 tracks.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SkyTrain_(Vancouver)#/media/File:Vancouver_Skytrain_and_Seabus_Map.svg

The first 2 SkyTrain bridges also should have had a foot & bike path on both sides.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SkyTrain_%28Vancouver%29#/media/File:Vancouver_SkyTrain_track_diagram_v3.svg

Unfortunately, the North_Arm_Bridge for the Canada Line was also designed to not have at least 3 tracks & 2 bus lanes. There is only one combined foot & bike path, when there should have been 2. Fortunately, the Tilikum_Crossing's_Design allowed for 2 types of rail systems, bus access, with bike & footpaths on both sides. The Tilikum_Crossing in Portland is so well designed that such similar bridges should be built in Calgary & Edmonton, or even Winnipeg, some day.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SkyTrain_(Vancouver)#Rolling_stock

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreal_Metro#Rolling_stock

Of course the SkyTrain always has the potential for higher capacity over the Edmonton_LRTCTrain & MAX_Light_Rail, simply because its a fully grade separated system. The biggest mistake for the SkyTrain was that it wasn't designed to ultimately have a 152.4 m station, like the Montreal_Metro has.

Selective+Door+Operation can enable longer trains on the system.

Oakridge Park and Mall

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6Kwx7SctJ4

Somehow the people around Broadway Station weren't able to stop this. Well, the Oakridge Station area is becoming its own town centre in that part of provincial Vancouver. Yet, the Broadway & Commercial area is already a big transportation intersection.

Despite the C-Line still only running 2 car joke trains, there is a potential to have 3 car trains. That's still pretty sad when the 50 m stations should have been built to eventually accommodate 5-6 car trains. Unfortunately, the planners never seriously considered to have a future level station clearance of 100-120 m. In contrast, the Montreal Metro has 152.5 m stations and can accommodate 9 car trains. The Vancouver Mind Virus (VMV) has always prevented the city from thinking on a big scale.
