Metro Vancouver expected to grow by 50,000 people a year

Of course all the real big cities around the world are able to properly plan & build up an appropriate level of infrastructure, were as Greater Vancouver keeps taking a scaled back approach. Especially within the small city limits of  Vancouver.

Little backwater NW should have been properly planned as a gateway between Surrey, Burnaby & Coquitlam, decades ago. However, there has been a multi-generational resistance mentality & its quite apparent in the stunted infrastructure.

Make sure that there is no provision for a LRT deck, because NW & Surrey only needs one rail transit line. A provision for a 2nd deck would ensure future truck capacity, but that would mean to properly plan for growth. This multi-generational congestive planning approach in BC is so absurd.

Of course there were no bike lanes & footpaths on the bridge. Apparently, it was better to just squeeze all bike & foot traffic onto the very narrow Pattullo_Bridge, which only has 1 sidewalk no wider than a bathtub.

Having a freeway system within the city limits of Vancouver would have been too damaging. People got so freaked out about it and didn't properly realize that there still should have been 2 bus lanes and 2 HOV lanes crossing the inlet. The plan should have also included 2 truck lanes and at least 2 train tracks in a bridge or tunnel, no freeway required, just a link to the surface streets of Vancouver & North Vancouver.

BC doesn't even have the population of one Switzerland. Yet, many local people already say that BC is too populated. WTH? Most of the worlds population is non-white. Keeping the infrastructure short, small & narrow is a strange way to symbolically refuse to build for more people on a mostly non-white world.

Unfortunatly, transportation planners haven't seen a need to link Horseshoe Bay and Park Royal with downtown Vancouver. Indeed, a direct LRT connection from the North_Shore_of Greater_Vancouver to YVR might as well be part of a Sci-Fi story. However, multigenerational congestive planning in Vancouver is a harsh reality.

A 3 lane Lion Bridge never had any bus tunnels & especially an LRT line built far under it. The bridge is too narrow to accommodate one, let alone 2 proper bus lanes. This is the finest in BC bottleneck stagnation planning. 

The Iron_Bridge was built too narrow for an urban TCH crossing. Unfortunatly, no one planned or designed it to eventually have a lower deck for buses, trains & trucks.

The Lacey V. Murrow Memorial Bridge in Seattle

The Lacey_V._Murrow_Memorial_Bridge opened in 1940 with 4 lanes. Once the Homer_M._Hadley_Memorial_Bridge opened in 1989, the Lacey_V._Murrow_Memorial_Bridge could be renovated. This was all part of a plan to have an 8 lane crossing with 2 train tracks.

Vancouver might eventually try to have its own version of train & highway bridge to the North Shore. However, what's straightforward for Seattle & Montreal is difficult to accomplish in backwards Vancouver.

While the North Shore $HIT BOX fiasco is relatively new, generations have come & gone without sufficient funds going towards proper big city infrastructure. Who knows where all the money went? 

If only there was a proper oversight committee to make sure that Greater Vancouver was putting enough funds towards proper urban infrastructure.

A North Shore Skytrain on a new Ironworkers Memorial Bridge?

Either a rapid-bus crossing first, or a train crossing with 2 buss lanes for whenever the train is shut down. The NW Skybridge wasn't designed to have 2 bus & 2 bike lanes & 2 footpaths. Thus, the SkyBridge to Surrey remains as a fine inept example of backward BC planning. 

The North-Arm-Bridge to Richmond was also not designed to have 2 bus lanes, 2 bike lanes & 2 footpaths. Just one combined bike & footpath. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Arm_Bridge

Unfortunately, Greater Vancouver doesn't want to provide 24hr trains. Yet, there seems to be a reluctance to have a series of regional bus-bridges, because most of the existing bridges are too narrow to have 2 extra bus lanes.

While Surrey might want to have more autonomy, its still part of the Metro_Vancouver_Regional_District.

TransLink to extend North Shore RapidBus route to Metrotown starting in 2027

The Kwasen Village & BCIT area is becoming a new intersection of housing & shopping, as well as education. So, hopefully starting in 2027, there will be an express bus from Metrotown_to_West-Vancouver. It will run along Willingdon Avenue providing a rapid bus link between Metrotown and Brentwood-Town-Centre-Station. Then onto N.Vancouver & W.Vancouver. This is being done, because backwards Vancouver refuses to build a rapid bus tunnel under or near the absurd, 3 lane Lions_Gate Bridge. Plus, the BC Government isn't interested in extending the SkyTrain on a bridge or through a tunnel to W.Vancouver. Thus, the inept, 3 lane Lions-Gate-Bridge remains as one of the worst bottlenecks or chokepoints in the world. 

Perth, WA built a 10 lane bridge with double train tracks in the middle of it.

Seattle, WA did something similar, but their 3 section bridge or crossing has 4 lanes each way & a double track middle section.

Montreal also did something similar to Seattle & Perth.

Being from backwards Vancouver & backwater BC, it's always amazing to see what other places can do, simply because they aren't in BC.

Fortunately, Perth, Seattle & Montreal don't have to contend with anything like the inept Vancouver & BC transportation mentality. It's mindboggeling that in 2025, Vancouver is still only running 4 car trains to Surrey & only 2 car trains to Coquitlam & Richmond. This, combined with several narrow bridges, makes it one of the most congested cities in the world. It's a sad & pathetic situation, because things in BC should be designed for proper future capacity expansion.

The Best fix for North Shore traffic is to upgrade or replace both bridges

When there is a refusal to build bigger and better bridges, there still should be a regional network of bus and train bridges. However, the gridloc planning agenda keeps winning out.

Unfortunatly, after decades of inept transportation planning and then so much money wasted down a $HIT-PIPE, the North Shore keeps getting hit hard from the $HIT-BOX planning mentality. 

The Tilikum+Crossing in Portland is a fantastic example of modern infrastructure planning and development. It allows for the MAX-LRT, the streetcar, the bus, bikes and pedestrians to conveniently get across. The nice thing about the TC is that no lanes had to be removed or repurposed on the other Portland bridges. Perhaps that's why something like the TC isn't allowed in BC, because it could actually help to improve transportation efficiency. 

The Washington+Avenue+Bridge is another example of what's not allowed in Greater Vancouver or anywhere else in the BC part of Canada. After all this time, Greater Vancouver is still so lacking in a regional network of transit+bridges

It's sad and unfortunate that so much money was diverted and wasted on an over-budget $HIT-box. Yet, no bus bridges or bus tunnels have been built to the North Shore, so far.  At least one of the SkyTrain lines should have been extended to the North Shore at least a dozen years ago.
